Implant-Supported Dentures
Do you often find yourself struggling to keep your dentures in place? We offer denture stabilization with dental implants. Implants are small posts that we permanently place into your jawbone. They create a stable base for your denture to snap onto to keep it secure throughout the day. Another benefit of implant-supported dentures is that the implants stabilize your jawbone and help prevent bone loss!
Crowns
At Discovery Dental, we specialize in dental crowns for restorative and cosmetic purposes. If you’re looking for a permanent solution to a fragmented, aesthetically displeasing, or infected tooth, crowns can get your smile back in tip-top shape. Our professional team will work with you to create a treatment plan that fits both your smile and your budget.
What Is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns (also known as dental caps) can be utilized for both cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry. These versatile covers are placed directly over the tooth to restore both functionality and appearance when necessary. You may need a dental crown if you:
Have a decaying tooth that is beyond what a filling can fix; Need to prevent a weakened tooth from breaking; Want to restore an entire tooth using a dental implant; Have a cosmetic issue that you would like to cover
Are Dental Crowns Permanent?
Crowns can be placed both permanently and temporarily. However, most temporary crowns are only used for the few weeks it takes to customize a permanent crown. Be sure to take extra care while wearing a temporary crown as they are not as durable as your permanent crown will be. With proper care, your permanent crown can last anywhere between 10 to 15 years.
What Maintenance Do Dental Crowns Require?
Many people believe that crowned teeth are not subject to complications since they are covered. However, crowns require the same amount of care as regular teeth. A good oral hygiene regimen includes brushing twice daily, flossing once a day, and regularly using an alcohol-free, fluoride-based mouthwash.
Are Dental Crowns Affordable?
The cost of a dental crown procedure depends largely upon what material the crown is made out of and each patient’s specific needs. Common crown materials include metallic alloy, porcelain, gold, and ceramic, each option varying in price. After your consultation, our team will be able to give you a customized treatment plan and cost estimate.
Fillings
Teeth fillings to help you smile. Almost everyone will need a tooth filling once in their lifetime. Your Discovery Dental care team can guide you through a dental filling procedure for a healthier smile. Tooth fillings can keep a cavity or chipped tooth from becoming a bigger problem and your Discovery Dental care team is here to help.
Filling a cavity
Did you need a filling at your recent dental appointment? You likely had a cavity. A cavity is a tiny opening formed as a result of damaged tooth enamel. Bacteria, sugary food, poor dental hygiene and even wear are typical causes.
Signs of a cavity include: Sudden, unexplained mouth pain, or pain when biting down or chewing—although this could be a sign of a more advanced dental issue; Teeth sensitivity near the cavity; White, brown or black spots on the tooth surface; Visible holes in the tooth or teeth
Repairing cracked or damage teeth
If your teeth are cracked or damaged, they require more extensive work than a simple tooth filling. A root canal or extraction are likely your only option to relieve pain and prevent further infection of your surrounding teeth and gums.
Signs of a cracked tooth include: Sharp pain when biting down that quickly disappears; Intermittent mouth pain; Pain when drinking or eating; Feeling like you have something stuck between your teeth
How teeth fillings work
Most dental filling procedures at Discovery Dental work like this: Application of a local anesthetic to limit pain or discomfort; The removal of any decay from the affected tooth or teeth; Tooth or teeth restoration with a composite or amalgam (silver/metal); A bite check to make sure your teeth align comfortably.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a natural mineral present in the water and food we consume. According to the American Dental Association (ADA) fluoride is referred to as “nature’s cavity fighter”. When applied topically to the teeth, fluoride treatment near you strengthens the enamel, which is the protective surface of your teeth and prevents the formation of cavities. Cavities form when existing bacteria in the mouth feed off of food particles and produce harmful acid that dissolves the enamel. A professional fluoride treatment is recommended to children every 6 months during their routine dental check-ups at our dental clinic.
Although water and some foods are a source of fluoride, it may not be sufficient. Your dentist will recommend the use of home and/or professional fluoride treatment near you to adult patients also.
Fluoride treatment is beneficial for: The deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of the teeth; Patients with exposed and sensitive root surfaces; Patients with decent to poor oral hygiene habits; Patients who regularly consume sugar and carbohydrates; Patients with inadequate exposure to fluorides; Patients with inadequate saliva flow; Patients with a recent history of dental decay.
Your dentist can apply fluoride to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. A professional fluoride treatment contains a much higher concentration than the amount found in over-the-counter products such as toothpaste and mouthwash.
Fluoride treatments cannot completely protect your teeth; therefore, it is essential to have a proper oral hygiene routine at home. Make sure to brush twice a day and floss at least once to achieve optimum oral health. With the right preventative care, you can ensure that you won’t face serious dental issues in the future.
Receiving a fluoride treatment can help prevent tooth decay and other oral health issues. We especially recommend children and teens receive fluoride treatments regularly. If you are interested in learning more about how fluoride treatments can benefit your oral health, contact us today!
Inlays & Onlays
Dental Inlays or Onlays are Bigger than a Filling, Smaller than a Crown. Dental inlays or onlays are restorative dental treatments that repair damaged or decayed teeth. Dentists use them when a regular filling isn’t enough to restore your tooth, but a crown is too much.
The difference between the two dental restorations is what part of the tooth they replace. For example, a dental inlay fits into the prepared cavity of a tooth. By contrast, a dental onlay also covers one or more cusp, which is the pointed part of your tooth’s biting surface.
Both dental treatments provide a natural-looking solution to restore your tooth’s functionality. Custom-made in a lab to match the shape and color of your tooth, dental inlays or onlays are made of durable materials, like porcelain or composite resin bonded to your teeth with a special adhesive.
Who Might Need a Dental Onlay?
We recommend dental inlays or onlays when you have moderate to severe tooth decay, cracked teeth, or large fillings that need replacing. Patients with weakened teeth due to teeth grinding or a history of multiple dental procedures may also benefit from dental inlays or onlays. Our team will perform a thorough examination and determine if either treatment is right for you.
5 Signs You Might Need a Dental Inlay or Onlay
You experience tooth sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks; You have visible tooth damage, cracks, or cavities; You experience tooth pain when chewing or biting; You have an old filling that needs to be replaced; You have a large filling that requires additional support.
Inlays and onlays made of porcelain and composite materials can increase tooth strength up to 75% and last between ten and thirty years.
Nightguards
Nightguards are suitable for treating a range of conditions, including bruxism, TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder), and sleep apnea. The common theme is that they help your mouth stay in the ideal position while you sleep, protecting your teeth and the rest of your mouth. Simply put, wearing a mouth guard at night will protect your teeth from accidents or trauma from external impact. For example, if you grind your teeth in your sleep, the mouth guard will add a layer separating them from each other. This way, your teeth won’t be able to grind directly on each other, which can lead to damage.
When Dr. Khayyat suggests that you get a nightguard, he will take the time to get you one that can fit your teeth properly. This ensures a snug and proper fit. The result is not only an increase in effectiveness but also a high level of comfort. Not only are nightguards comfortable, but they can reduce your discomfort, depending on the condition they are treating. For example, TMD is sometimes due to bruxism and can be unsettling and uncomfortable. It can involve jaw pain, migraines, and other aches. But nightguards can help reduce these problems, also reducing the pain.
Sealants
Some teeth need more protection than others, no matter how often you brush and floss. At Discovery Dental, we happily offer dental sealants for kids and adults. With dental sealants, your teeth will have an extra layer of protection to shield them against decay and food particles. Call our office to schedule an appointment for dental sealants in San Marcos today!
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The back teeth, known as molars, often contain deep grooves that can be difficult to clean when brushing and flossing. When a dental sealant is layered on top of the molar, bacteria, food particles, and acids are prevented from collecting in the deep grooves, reducing the risk of decay and other dental issues. Though dental sealants provide protection, dental sealants are not a substitute for brushing and flossing.
Are dental sealants safe?
As with any dental treatment, safety is our top priority. While the American Dental Association has approved dental sealants for kids and adults, our team will always consider individual health factors before placing dental sealants. If our team determines dental sealants are right for you, you can expect the dental sealants to last at least five years. If a dental sealant falls off or is causing concern, we encourage you to reach out to our office.
Who should get dental sealants?
Early cavity prevention is highly beneficial in maintaining your natural smile. Though early cavity prevention is best, making dental sealants for kids a great preventive treatment, that doesn’t mean adults can’t also benefit from dental sealants. Any patient at risk of developing cavities or would like extra protection in combination with their oral hygiene routine can benefit from getting dental sealants and should reach out to our office to learn more!
Sports Mouthguards
An athletic mouthguard helps protect your teeth, jaw, and supporting gum tissue from injury while participating in collision and/or contact sports. Participation in sports has steadily increased. Several sources estimate that between 20 to 25 million kids participate in sports annually.
Competition among players and teams has intensified in recent years which has contributed to an increase in the number of sport related injuries that impact your face and smile.
National Youth sports Foundation for Safety reports show dental injuries are the most common type of injury sustained while participating in their chosen sport. According to the American Dental Association, approximately 10-20% of all sport related injuries are maxillofacial (injury of the face, jaw, and/or teeth).
An athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain damage to their teeth when they’re not wearing a protective mouthguard while on the field of play (Source: Nationwide Children’s Hospital). In an effort to help get the word out and increase the awareness about the importance of wearing mouthguards, April has been designated as National Face Protection Month.
An Athletic Mouthguard Helps Prevent Traumatic Dental Injuries
Listed below are the most common reported sport related traumatic dental injuries that can be easily avoided by choosing to wear a athletic mouthguard while participating in your favorite sport.
Tooth fracture; Avulsion (Tooth knocked out); Tooth displacement (Tooth pushed back or forward); Injury to TMJ (Tempromandibular Joint); Injury to soft tissues; Protects dental brackets and wires; Protects your teeth, lips, cheeks, jaw, and supporting gum tissue from direct and indirect impact; Helps prevent head concussions
The National Youth Sports Foundation for Safety estimates the cost of reimplanting a tooth including follow up dental treatment is roughly $5000.00 or the equivalent of fabricating 83 custom fitted athletic mouthguards from your dentist.
Teeth Cleanings
Routine dental exams and cleanings can maintain or improve the status of your oral health. At Discovery Dental, we’re happy to have you and the entire family come in for a dental exam and cleaning! With a dental exam and cleaning, our highly trained team can catch and treat any dental issues before they worsen and provide tips for oral health care. Call our San Marcos office to schedule your dental appointment for an exam and cleaning today!
How long does a dental exam and cleaning take?
On average, an exam and cleaning can take about thirty minutes to an hour. During this time, our dental hygienist and dentist will thoroughly exam your teeth and mouth for cavities, abnormalities, and signs of gingivitis. Our dental hygienist will also perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums. During this time, plaque and tartar that build on the enamel over time will get removed. After this, a fluoride treatment will be optional to help strengthen the enamel, and tips to improve or maintain your oral health will get discussed.
How often should I have a dental cleaning and exam?
It’s recommended by the American Dental Association that patients should schedule a dental appointment for an exam and cleaning every six months. Ultimately, this time frame should get set by your dentist as the status of your oral health will depend on how often you have a dental exam and cleaning. The visits allow the dentist to upkeep your oral health and let you express any dental concerns that may have developed.
TMD (Jaw Pain) Therapy
Commonly misdiagnosed or overlooked, a subtle misalignment in the temporomandibular joint can be a common & significant source of head & neck pain. Even some migraines can be attributed to TMD.
While many cases of TMJ pain or discomfort resolve themselves without major treatment, some patients will need more long-term solutions. Because TMD can look so different depending on the patient & symptoms, treatment can also vary drastically, & unfortunately there isn’t one method that works for every patient.
Pain management is often a critical aspect of treatment, as most patients request help with TMD due to some level of pain. Such patients may find some relief with hot or cold therapy. Jaw strengthening exercises can also be effective for some—think of it like physical therapy for your jaw muscles. Pain medication can also be effective for managing pain on a short-term basis.
What Is TMD?
The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the joint connecting your jaw to your skull. You use this joint when you chew, swallow, speak, & even yawn—pretty much whenever you move your jaw.
Jaw pain originating from this joint is commonly classified as a temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, & can be felt in the joint itself or in the connecting muscles. While classified under one name, TMD can actually be caused by many different things, such as injury, grinding or pressure, arthritis, misalignment or even stress.
However, pain isn’t the only symptom that can indicate a disorder of this joint. Some patients may notice popping or grinding sounds when moving their jaw. Others might experience tenderness, stiffness or locking of their jaw. In fact, dentists often look for more than just pain when diagnosing TMD.
Treatment Overview
If your dentist suspects that stress or pressure on the jaw joint may be contributing to your TMD symptoms, you may benefit from relaxation techniques. From meditation & breathing exercises to medication targeting muscle relaxation or even anxiety, simply easing tension in the muscles around the jaw may help. Patients who grind their teeth while they sleep might find a night guard useful in reducing pressure, which can help ease the pain.
Additionally, some lifestyle changes may ease symptoms & give your joint & surrounding muscles time to recover from any pressure or injury that may have caused the TMD symptoms. Patients sometimes try eating soft foods rather than crunchy or chewy foods. Others simply avoid big jaw movements, like yawns or large mouthfuls of food. Quitting chewing gum could give your jaw muscles a break from constant irritation.
In some cases, even fixing a misaligned bite with orthodontic treatment or trying botox injections in the muscles around the joint can relieve symptoms, but these are not typically suggested unless other methods have not made a difference in a patient’s symptoms.
In especially severe cases of TMD, often including consistent, intense pain or limited jaw mobility that impedes eating or drinking, your dentist may recommend surgery. This is a last-resort treatment option after preferable conservative treatment has failed to relieve the pain in or around the joint.
If you have frequent & severe head or neck pain, you owe it to yourself to investigate our doctor’s life-changing approach to correcting these TMJ problems. Call us to schedule a consultation to talk about what we can do for you.
Cosmetic Services & Treatments
Cosmetic Services & Treatments
If you are feeling down about your smile’s appearance, the world-class cosmetic dentistry services at Discovery Dental in San Marcos can restore your smile’s beauty. Fast, effective, and safe, cosmetic dentistry is a minimally invasive option for improving your smile. Our office offers several cosmetic dentistry treatments for improving the shape, size, color, position, alignment, and overall appearance of your teeth.
What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Unlike restorative dentistry, which focuses on correcting and treating underlying issues with teeth and gums, cosmetic dentistry improves the appearance of your teeth, gums, and bite. After all, even the healthiest teeth can suffer the effects of age, lifestyle, and misalignment.
The cosmetic services we offer here at Discovery Dental can correct problems with your teeth’s shape, size, alignment, and color so that your smile will look as good as it feels!
Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry
Over the last few decades, cosmetic dentistry has become increasingly commonplace as more and more Americans desire a healthier, prettier smile. In recent years, advanced technologies and decreasing cost has helped make cosmetic treatments affordable for a diverse range of budgets.
Reasons People Get Cosmetic Dentistry
STAINED TEETH
Deeply discolored teeth may be the most common problem in cosmetic dentistry. Over time, teeth can become discolored from consuming drinks like red wine and coffee. Discoloration can also happen from medication, aging, smoking cigarettes, or chewing tobacco.
MISSING TEETH
When you lose a tooth, you lose more than a smile. If it is not replaced quickly, bite functionality significantly decreases and the jawbone will begin to shrink away from disuse, causing a sunken look in the face that makes an individual appear much older.
CHIPPED TEETH
As we age, our teeth become vulnerable. Even without pain or obvious problems, a cracked or broken tooth should be taken seriously! The tooth is now susceptible to decay, is more likely to further crack or break, and you risk losing your tooth completely (whether naturally or via extraction).
GAPPED TEETH
Tooth gaps can trap food particles, which may cause plaque and tartar to easily form in those cracks. Filling in problematic gaps in your teeth can help you improve your oral health, and in cases where a gap is unwanted, it will likely even help boost your confidence and self-esteem!
CROOKED TEETH
The quickest route to a beautiful smile is fixing crooked teeth. Crooked teeth are hard to keep clean, leading to many problems. Teeth misalignment may occur naturally, or as a result of not wearing a retainer prescribed by your dentist.
Additional action is sometimes required to fix these problems. Discovery Dental of San Marcos offers a variety of cosmetic dentistry options to get your smile back on track!
Veneers
Are you looking for a dentist to dramatically transform your smile? Veneers might be the answer for you! At Discovery Dental, we understand that life can be tough on your teeth. Whether you’re suffering from severe discoloration, cracked or broken teeth, wide gaps, or issues with the length of your teeth, we can help. If you’re one of the many people who thought their smile could never be like the ones they saw on TV or in magazines, think again. A radiant, red carpet-ready smile is within your grasp thanks to porcelain veneers.
Aesthetic imperfections can put a real damper on your confidence. Porcelain veneers are a great way to upgrade your smile. Traditional veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are affixed to your teeth. They’re strong, long lasting, and can be cared for in the exact same way you care for your natural teeth. The veneers procedure is simple: after designing and creating your custom-made veneers, we remove a small amount of enamel from your natural teeth and then bond them using a special cement. Porcelain veneers, if well cared for, can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years or longer. All in all, you can enjoy your new smile in about two to three visits. Routine checkups and cleanings every six months are still recommended to ensure that your natural teeth are still healthy and functioning properly.
Teeth Whitening
Your smile is often one of the first things people notice when they meet you. If you have dull, discolored teeth, professional whitening is one of the easiest ways to dramatically enhance your smile. At Discovery Dental, we offer in-office and take-home whitening treatments to help you achieve a confident smile that’s sure to impress!
If you want almost-instant whitening results for an upcoming event or just because, our in-office whitening could be the perfect solution for you. One of the advantages of one-visit whitening is that our team will take care of the whole treatment and make adjustments to fit your needs and level of tooth sensitivity. In as little as one hour, you can leave our office with a smile that’s up to eight shades lighter.
Smile Makeover
Do your teeth cause you to look away from the mirror? Are your once pearly whites now drab or discolored? Then you need a smile makeover!
In a world where image is everything, many people are looking to improve their appearance with the help of a smile makeover dentist from Discovery Dental of San Marcos!
What is a Smile Makeover?
Smile makeovers are a form of cosmetic dentistry designed to restore your smile and improve your appearance. They are primarily used to treat crooked, uneven, discolored, chipped, fractured, or missing teeth. Smile makeovers are also used to treat gaps between teeth. While smile makeovers are effective for fixing common cosmetic issues, your dentist may recommend Invisalign or braces as an alternative to correcting a bite problem.
At Discovery Dental of San Marcos our smile makeover, dental & aesthetic center is here to help! We love seeing the joy our patients have when they see the transformation of their smile.
Why Choose a Smile Makeover?
Because a beautiful smile is an important asset, many people avoid showing their teeth because they dread not having the “perfect” smile” or a slightly more natural look. But whatever your reason is, Discovery Dental of San Marcos will make it possible for you to have the smile of your dreams!
There are several questions you can ask yourself are when deciding whether or not to choose a smile makeover: Are your teeth as white as you want? Are any teeth chipped, cracked, or worn? Does your smile have a gummy appearance? Do your teeth seem too large or small? Are you okay with the alignment and spacing of your teeth?
If you have any of these problems, you’re a great candidate for a smile makeover from Discovery Dental of San Marcos!
What Does a Smile Makeover Correct?
Smile makeovers utilize a variety of cosmetic dental procedures to make you feel more confident and better looking. When you book a smile makeover consultation at Discovery Dental of San Marcos your dentist will suggest a variety of procedures to make you feel more confident and better looking, including the following:
Matching Tooth Color: Metallic dental fillings can be replaced by natural, tooth-colored restorations that match the color of surrounding teeth. Tooth color and shading are important to consider before procedures like porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges, composite bonding, and dental implants. Teeth whitening is often recommended as a way to fix discolored teeth.
Alignment and Spacing: Crooked, overlapping, or gapped teeth can be straightened and aligned, when necessary, through orthodontics, Invisalign or improved with veneers.
Replacing Missing Teeth: One or more missing teeth may negatively impact your appearance, affect your bite, and increase your risk for tooth decay, making replacement an integral part of oral health and facial esthetics. You can replace missing teeth via dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures.
Implant-Supported Bridges
A bridge is a restoration for two or more missing teeth in a row. There are many methods for dealing with a multiple-tooth restoration, but an implant-supported bridge is often the most secure and long-lasting option. Common restorations like fixed bridges or removable partials can cause the surrounding bone to weaken because they are dependent on adjacent teeth for support. Implant-supported bridges integrate with the natural bone, providing a much stronger and more natural restoration.
The bridge is placed using just a few implants, depending on how many teeth are missing. Once the implants are placed, temporary teeth are attached over them until it is time to attach the permanent bridge. The result looks just like your natural teeth and allows you to chew and speak properly.
To find out if you are a candidate for implant-supported bridges, contact Discovery Dental to schedule a consultation.
Bridges
Dental bridges are essentially three or more dental crowns that are attached together and used to restore the appearance and functionality of teeth. Bridges can serve the same purposes as crowns, like protecting and supporting damaged teeth, and they can also be used to replace one or more missing teeth. To learn more about our dental bridges and schedule your next visit with our team, please contact our office!
What are the benefits of dental bridges?
Dental bridges offer many benefits for anyone who needs to restore multiple teeth or replace one or more missing teeth. The benefits of dental bridges include: Minimally Invasive; Cost Effective; Virtually No Recovery Time; Evenly Distributes the Force of the Bite; No Food Restrictions; Helps Prevent Nearby Teeth from Shifting; Pediatric Dentistry
What is the dental bridge process?
During your first appointment, we will completely numb your teeth and gums using a local anesthetic. Next, any teeth that will be covered by the bridge will need to be reshaped so that the bridge can fit over them without looking bulky. Our team will then take impressions of these teeth and place a temporary bridge over them. Your permanent bridge should arrive from the lab in about two weeks, after which we will remove the temporary bridge and place your custom, permanent dental bridge.
Which tooth-replacement method should I choose?
If you are unsure of the treatment option that you would like to go with, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our team. Generally speaking, patients like dental bridges because they do not require oral surgery like dental implants, and they can be designed, created, and placed in just a few weeks. They can also be a good choice for patients who do not have enough jawbone density for one or more dental implants. During your visit, we will assess your smile and your budget to help you determine if a dental bridge is right for you.

Orthodontics
Orthodontics
At Discovery Dental, we offer orthodontic treatment to children of all ages. Early orthodontics has become much more popular in recent years. Why? Treating orthodontic issues at an early age can result in a number of benefits. Above all else, it can help your child maintain a healthy and beautiful smile!
THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY INTERVENTION
Forty or fifty years ago, the halls of our high schools were filled with teenagers wearing braces. These days, that sight is much less common because children are undergoing orthodontic treatment at an earlier age. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), your child should receive their first orthodontic evaluation by the time they are seven years old.
By the age of seven, your child should have enough permanent teeth to make a proper assessment. During a consultation, Dr. Khayyat will be able to identify problems that require early intervention to promote healthier tooth development. We may also determine that treatment is needed, but not until a later date. In some cases, we may even tell you that no treatment is required.
The bottom line: early orthodontics can prevent small issues from becoming major complications. Many orthodontic problems are also easier to treat at an earlier age before the teeth and jaws are done developing. Once development is complete, it becomes much harder to move teeth to their proper alignment.
COMMON ORTHODONTIC ISSUES
The goal of orthodontic treatment is to improve the function and aesthetics of your child’s smile. Early treatment can even guide the growth and development of their permanent teeth and jawbone.
The orthodontic issues best suited for early treatment include: Crowded Teeth; Gapped Teeth; Crooked or Rotated Teeth; Underbites; Overbites; Crossbites; Open Bites; Issues Related to Excessive Thumb, Finger, or Pacifier Habits; Missing or Extra Teeth
BRACES AND OTHER APPLIANCES
Most parents are familiar with braces, the most common orthodontic appliance. Conventional braces consist of metal brackets, metal wires, and elastic bands. The brackets are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth and linked together by the wire, which is held in place by the bands. Throughout treatment the wire is tightened, placing pressure on the teeth until they move to the proper position.
Thanks to technological advancements, braces these days are more discreet and comfortable than ever before. They are also more effective, which can result in faster treatment times. Even still, there may be a brief adjustment period as your child gets used to eating and speaking with their new appliance.
We also offer clear aligner trays, like Invisalign, as an effective alternative to braces. At the beginning of your child’s treatment, we will take impressions of their upper and lower teeth. These impressions will be used to create a series of clear, plastic aligner trays. Each tray in the series is designed to move the teeth to a slightly better position.
Many children prefer aligner trays because they are virtually invisible. These esthetically pleasing trays can save your child from feeling self-conscious about orthodontic treatment.
We also offer several orthodontic treatments designed to correct malocclusions (misaligned bites). In the end, the type of treatment we recommend is dictated by the severity of your child’s misalignments. Talk with Dr. Khayyat to learn more about our treatment options!
Invisalign
Traditional braces can leave some patients feeling self-conscious about having a mouth full of visible metal. With Invisalign clear aligners, you don’t have to hide your teeth while you straighten them. Clear aligner therapy allows patients to feel confident throughout the entire straightening process. Contact our office to schedule your Invisalign consultation!
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign utilizes a series of clear, discreet aligners to gently push your teeth into their ideal positions. It’s a convenient, subtle teeth straightening method that can correct mild to moderate alignment and spacing issues.
The Invisalign Process
Before your Invisalign treatment begins, we’ll work with you to determine the areas of your smile that need improvement and discuss your smile goals. Once we’ve determined that Invisalign is right for you, we’ll take impressions of your teeth and map out your personalized treatment plan.
We’ll send your impressions and treatment plan to an off-site lab where they’ll create your custom aligners. You’ll wear each set of aligners every day and move on to the next series every two weeks. Our team will send you home with a few sets at a time so you’ll only have to visit our office every 4-6 weeks!
Benefits of Invisalign
Compared to traditional orthodontic options, Invisalign provides patients with a number of advantages: Clear aligners are virtually invisible; Smooth plastic won’t irritate your cheeks or gums; Removable aligners so you can eat, brush, and floss like normal; Fewer appointments; On average, treatment time is shorter than metal braces!
Is Invisalign painful?
Your teeth are likely not used to being shifted, so experiencing some soreness and discomfort when you first begin wearing clear aligners is normal. We recommend putting in new aligners at night so that the initial tooth movements can be made while you are asleep. Dental wax and over-the-counter pain medications are also an easy way to reduce soreness and any gum agitation. Invisalign aligners are made of a smooth plastic material, and once your teeth become accustomed to them, your discomfort should be minimal.
Can I just wear Invisalign aligners at night?
Invisalign aligners should ideally be worn as often as possible, or any time the patient is not eating, drinking, or brushing their teeth. Invisalign is able to help patients achieve straighter smiles in an average of 12 to 18 months because of this. Patients who do not wear their aligners often enough may find that their treatment time is extended, as each aligner needs an appropriate amount of time to shift the teeth properly. Once your teeth are straightened, we will provide you with a retainer that is only worn at night.
ClearCorrect™
ClearCorrect braces are an alternative to both traditional braces and Invisalign. In our San Marcos dentist office, we provide this solution for straightening teeth discretely. If you live in or near the San Marcos area and want to improve your appearance, we invite you to call and schedule a consultation to learn how this treatment option can work for you.
What is ClearCorrect?
Instead of relying on metal brackets and wires to move teeth, ClearCorrect braces use a series of clear aligners to move teeth into place. The aligners are made of a clear and comfortable plastic that looks similar to a full retainer. By taking care of them and refraining from scratching their surface, aligners will remain clear and virtually invisible when worn. At Discovery Dental, we can show you how to keep your aligners in perfect condition during the treatment process.
The aligners are created using an impression of your teeth and gums. Once received, the lab will create a series of aligners that start with the current position of your teeth and slowly move them until they are perfectly straight. A patient will wear each aligner for about four to six weeks. Afterward, the patient will replace the old aligner with the next one in the series. The aligners place pressure on specific teeth to gradually move the teeth for a more comfortable experience. By wearing all of the aligners in the series, your teeth will move from crooked to perfectly straight.
The aligners are given to you at the beginning of the procedure so that you do not have to visit our San Marcos dentist office every time you need to switch them out. This allows you to spend less time in the dental chair than you would when wearing traditional metal braces.
ClearCorrect vs. Traditional Braces
Traditional metal braces are extremely effective for straightening teeth and treating misaligned jaws. While metal braces are more comfortable than they were in the past, they are still noticeable and unfavorable to many. With the wires, brackets, and rubber bands, traditional metal braces can negatively impact how a person looks and feels. Many people find that traditional braces are distracting and do not fit into a busy or professional lifestyle.
Simultaneously, metal braces are difficult to keep clean as food can become stuck between the brackets, requiring a special floss to remove the bits of food. At Discovery Dental, we can help patients receive the necessary treatment without having to drastically change their diet or skip out on some of their favorite treats when wearing braces. While only temporary, this can be inconvenient and, at times, frustrating. Given the tendency for food to become stuck, those wearing braces also need to spend more time brushing and flossing throughout the day.
ClearCorrect is a far more convenient option than other methods for straightening one’s teeth. Patients remove the aligners themselves when eating, so there are no restrictions on which foods you can eat. Patients also do not have to worry about something becoming stuck in the brackets or the embarrassment of feeling awkward while eating. Patients wear ClearCorrect for at least 22 hours per day, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a romantic dinner, business meeting, or lunch without metal braces ruining one’s confidence. This makes it possible for patients to maintain their current lifestyle without further restrictions.
Another advantage of ClearCorrect braces over traditional ones is that patients can remove the aligners while playing sports, a musical instrument or singing in the choir. As a dentist, we recommend that athletes wear a mouth guard during practice or a game. With braces or other teeth-straightening products, this can be an issue. With ClearCorrect, patients can remove the aligners to wear the mouth guard. If you play sports regularly, we invite you to schedule a consultation to see how easier it is to continue wearing a mouthguard when using ClearCorrect to straighten your teeth.
Oral Surgery
Oral Surgery
Sometimes, in spite of our best efforts at taking good care of our oral health, oral surgery might become necessary. When you find out you will need oral surgery to have a tooth extracted, treat gum issues, or place dental implants, you want to go to someone you can trust, a dentist who is trained in oral surgical procedures. You want a dentist like Dr. Khayyat, an experienced dentist and oral surgeon who has not only received special training in oral surgery, but who has conducted many procedures over the years.
The prospect of facing oral surgery can be a stressful one. We’ve put together some information below to provide you with more information and to address some of your concerns. If you still have questions about oral surgery, rest assured that you can contact our San Marcos dental office to find out more. We want to make sure you have all the information you need to make the best choice for your oral health.
All-on-4 Dental Implants
Nothing lights up a room like a genuinely-felt smile. Your smile can convey connection, kindness, and happiness; it is the first thing people notice about you. In fact, when you come across someone with food stuck between their teeth, you can’t help but spot it immediately. People often hide imperfect teeth or flaws in their smiles when they feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. Missing one or several teeth can severely impact your personal level of happiness and ability to eat your favorite foods.
If you have several missing teeth, you might wonder what your options are for replacement. Dental implants are generally considered to be the best alternative for restoring the form and function of your smile and mouth, but some patients cannot receive them for health or other reasons.
The good news is that the All-On-4 technique is available for patients who want their missing teeth restored quickly. Dr. Khayyat is an extensively trained dentist and oral surgeon who can create natural replacements for missing teeth using the All-on-4 technique.
If you are missing several teeth, Dr. Khayyat may recommend removable dentures as a tooth replacement option. While dentures have many benefits, many patients find that they can slip or move around, regardless of adhesives. Having a dental prosthetic that moves around when you eat or speak can be disconcerting and even embarrassing. What many people don’t know is that in addition to practical problems, the bone below the gum tissue will also start to deteriorate because there is no more chewing pressure on the teeth roots to stimulate the bone to maintain itself.
With All-On-4 implants, also called “Teeth-In-One-day,” Dr. Khayyat surgically implants four dental implants into the jawbone. These will mimic the placement of permanent teeth. While individual dental implants usually have a dental crown attached to the implant, with All-On-4 implants, an entire denture plate is secured to the implants. What this means is that in just one day, patients can leave with a set of functioning teeth while the healing process takes place. Because the implants integrate into the jaw, All-On-4 implants offer the same benefits as regular dental implants in that they stimulate and preserve the jawbone.
What Are the Benefits of All-On-4 Dental Implants?
In addition to patients being able to have teeth in one day, there are other advantages to this technology. It is particularly beneficial for patients who may have already undergone jawbone deterioration in that the implants can be placed wherever jawbone density is best. This makes All-On-4 ideal for patients who might not be able to have traditional dental implants.
Not only do these implants preserve jawbone density as well as your facial structure, but they remain secure. Unlike traditional dentures, which can shift, you can eat and speak comfortably with All-On-4 implants, knowing your teeth are not going to move. They also look natural and very similar to your natural teeth. There are economic benefits for patients as well since placing four dental implants will cost less than placing a mouthful. This is a real plus for patients who may be missing several teeth.
Are All-On-4 Implants Safe?
Yes, the process can be safe, reliable, effective, and have a high success rate. The most important aspect of the procedure is finding a highly skilled and experienced dental implant dentist. Placement of the implant angle is essential, including determining if there is enough bone structure present. If a dental implant is placed incorrectly, it may require redoing the entire procedure.
We recommend that patients check on the credentials of their dental implant dentist and examine their work with previous patients. It’s crucial to find a dental team that is transparent about your after-care treatment plan and cost of the entire implant surgery procedure. Your teeth are essential to your nutrition, appearance, and general quality of life.
Well-crafted prosthetics and implants can last you many years, and improve your self-confidence and outlook on life. For these reasons, we encourage our patients to do their homework before choosing the right dentist for them.
Bone Grafting
Periodontal Disease is the leading cause of bone loss in your mouth. Bone grafting is a procedure used to replace lost bone tissue and to encourage natural bone growth. Bone grafting can be used for a wide variety of periodontal procedures. These days, we have the ability to grow bone where needed.
There are several different types of dental bone grafts. These are the most common:
Autogenous Bone Graft: In this type of graft, the bone is removed from elsewhere in the body and implanted in the mouth. Common donor sites for grafting include the iliac section of the pelvis, the chin and the posterior third molar areas of the jaw. If large amounts of bone need to be harvested, the hip or the shin bone (tibia) are generally used.
Allograft: Synthetic bone (man-made) can be created in the laboratory and used in the bone grafting procedure. Bone can also be obtained from a bone bank (cadaver bone).Xenograft: This is the implantation of bovine (cow) bone. A xenograft is perfectly safe and has been used successfully for many years. Ample bone can be obtained and no secondary donor site is necessary.
Why do you need Bone Grafting?
There are many reasons why you may need a bone graft, but generally, the most common reason is to restore the jaw bone.
What Procedures are used with Grafting?
We use bone grafts for many periodontal procedures, but we use it most frequently in these procedures:
Dental Implants: Dental Implants are the preferred replacement method for missing teeth because they restore full functionality to the mouth; however, implants need to be firmly anchored to the jawbone to be effective. If the jawbone lacks the necessary quality or quantity of bone, grafting can strengthen and thicken the implant site.
Sinus Lift: A sinus lift entails elevating the sinus membrane and grafting bone onto the sinus floor so that implants can be securely placed.
Ridge Augmentation: Ridges in the bone can occur due to trauma, injury, birth defects or severe periodontal disease. The bone graft is used to fill in the ridge and make the jawbone a uniform shape.
Bone grafts are generally performed under local anesthetic. However, if a large amount of bone needs to be grafted, general anesthetic may be required to perform the procedure.
The grafting material needs to be either harvested or prepared for insertion. A small incision is made in the gum tissue and then is gently separated from the bone. The bone grafting material is then applied to the affected site.
The gum is then sutured into place and you will be booked for a follow-up appointment to double check the healing process.
Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is usually performed to improve the health of the gum tissue, prepare the mouth for a procedure, or correct a “gummy smile”. A “gummy smile” is used to describe an instance where teeth are covered with excess gum tissue resulting in a less esthetically-pleasing smile. The procedure involves reshaping or recontouring the gum tissue and bone around the tooth in question to create a new gum-to–tooth relationship. Crown lengthening can be performed on a single tooth, many teeth, or the entire gum line.
Crown lengthening is often required when your tooth needs a new crown or other restoration. The edge of that restoration is deep below the gum tissue and not immediately accessible. It is also usually too close to the bone or below the bone.
Crown lengthening allows us to reach the edge of the restoration, ensuring a proper fit to the tooth. It should also provide enough tooth structure so the new restoration will not come loose in the future. This allows you to clean the edge of the restoration when you brush and floss to prevent decay and gum disease.
About The Crown Lengthening Procedure
Crown lengthening takes approximately one hour but will largely depend on the amount of teeth involved and if any amount of bone will need to be removed. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthetic and involves a series of small incisions around the tissue to separate the gums from the teeth. Even if only one tooth requires the procedure, it will probably be necessary to adjust the surrounding teeth to enable a more even reshaping. In some cases, extraction of a small amount of bone will be necessary as well.
When Dr. Khayyat is satisfied that the teeth have sufficient exposure and the procedure is completed, the incisions will be cleaned with sterile water. Sutures are then placed to help secure the new gum-to-tooth relationship. Your teeth will look noticeably longer immediately after surgery because the gums have now been repositioned. You will need to be seen in one or two weeks to remove the sutures and evaluate your healing. The surgical site should be completely healed in approximately two to three months following the procedure. It is recommended to wait approximated 8-12 weeks following the procedure before completing final restorative procedures.
Dental Implants
If you have one or more missing teeth, you’re probably tired of the challenges missing teeth cause: Trouble chewing food thoroughly, removing food particles from your teeth, and even articulating certain words clearly. For many people, the cosmetic effects of a missing tooth are what trouble them the most.
No matter what your current situation, replacing missing teeth is one of the most effective and long-term ways to improve your healthy smile and appearance. The good news is that getting a dental implant at dental offices is a highly reliable, permanent solution for replacing missing teeth.
At Discovery Dental, we’re passionate about helping you restore your teeth for a worry-free, beautiful smile.
What are dental implants?
Your teeth have deep roots that keep your jawbone strong. Each tooth supports the other and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting out of place. When you lose a tooth, the bone in the empty space begins to deteriorate. Other teeth, without the tooth as support, shift over time and can move backwards in your mouth.
Oral health concerns are only part of the problem with missing teeth, however. Teeth help you chew and speak clearly, and when one or more teeth are missing, you notice difficulties in these areas. Although some people get accustomed to these challenges, the cosmetic effects of missing teeth can cause ongoing self-esteem issues in social or professional situations.
Dental implants solve all these problems. A common and highly reliable quality treatment, placing dental implants is our specialty.
A dental implant mimics your natural tooth’s roots by bonding with your jawbone. The biocompatible titanium post provides stability and bone stimulation, while a dental crown serves as the tooth’s surface. You can eat and speak normally again, fix the gap in your teeth, and be proud of your healthy smile again.
Why do so many dentists recommend dental implants?
According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, over three million people have dental implants, with that number growing by half a million each year. Tooth decay, gum disease, and injury are the leading causes of tooth loss. A long-term, reliable solution is essential for solving the problem of bone loss and the drawbacks of removable appliances.
Dental implants preserve and build new bone, provide a long-term solution to missing teeth, and have a high success rate. Of course, your dental implant restoration also looks completely natural and matches your other teeth in size, color, and shape. Restoring your teeth with highly reliable, natural-looking artificial teeth restores your self-confidence, too.
Dr. Khayyat is a formally trained surgeon and leading dental implant expert who performs hundreds of dental implant and bone graft procedures each year. If you’re concerned about a missing tooth, call our office to schedule a consultation. Dr. Khayyat is passionate about providing a positive experience for patients and educating them about all possible treatment options.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants are quickly becoming the preferred treatment for missing teeth for good reasons:
Restores your smile cosmetically. Once your dental implant is complete, you’ll love looking younger and healthier. No more hiding the gaps in your teeth – you can smile, laugh, and speak with confidence!
Protects bone. Dental implants are the only solution to missing teeth that preserve and stimulate bone growth, preventing oral health problems and undesirable facial changes.
Long-term solution. You’ll have an artificial tooth rather than a temporary device that may not fit properly or look natural. If cared for properly, dental implants can last a lifetime.
Gum Lift
When gum recession occurs, the body loses a major natural defense to bacteria. To prevent bacteria and further trauma, gum reconstruction using gum grafting may be necessary to restore form and function. Gum disease is caused by a combination of several factors, which includes: Thin gum tissue; A tooth or teeth that are malpositioned thus affecting the gum tissue; Plaque and calculus causing gingival inflammation; Brushing too hard or using a toothbrush that is too hard; Natural aging process; Mucogingival deformities.
Gum recession can also cause root sensitivity to hot and cold foods as well as an unsightly appearance to the tooth as the gum becomes exposed. Additionally, as the gum recedes, so does the bone, which can ultimately lead to more problematic issues.
What can be done?
The first way we can correct gum recession is to use the adjacent gum tissue to repair the recession. The limiting factor is how much adjacent gum tissue is available from the graft site. We can perform what is called a ‘gingival graft’ that can correct the issues you may be experiencing.
The second way is to use the patient’s own gum tissue (called an ‘autograft’) which is tissue taken from the roof of the mouth and then grafted directly to the affected area around the teeth.
The third way is to fix the recession using a grafting material called ‘AlloDerm.’ AlloDerm was introduced back in 1994 and was used initially in burn reconstruction and in head and neck plastic surgery.
Receding gums can be both unsightly and painful. The best defense for gum disease is proper brushing and flossing along with regular dental checkups and professional teeth cleanings. If you are unfortunate and still suffer from receding gums, seeking treatment from a periodontist is always an option.
Implant-Supported Dentures
According to the American College of Prosthodontists, at least 178 million Americans are missing one or more teeth. But no matter how many teeth you’ve lost, the impact on your appearance and oral function is significant.
Have you been living with multiple missing teeth and are looking for a long-term solution? Implant supported dentures, the alternative to traditional dentures, are a life-long solution to a full arch of missing teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, this option stimulates your jaw bone, so the health as well as the appearance of your smile can be restored simultaneously. Many patients report increased satisfaction in the stability and strength of their bite and the confidence boost from an aesthetic, new smile!
We offer several cosmetic dentistry treatments for replacing multiple missing teeth, which Dr. Khayyat can perform at our dental office. If you’re missing several teeth, we can place dental implants to support dentures or dental bridges in a treatment called implant-supported dentures or bridges. If you have multiple missing teeth in a row, dental implants can support a full denture in a treatment called full-implant denture.
Whereas traditional dentures rest on top of your gum line, implant supported dentures are anchored securely to the jaw bone with two or more implants per arch. A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Khayyat will determine whether any additional procedures, including bone grafting, may be performed prior to implant placement to ensure your implants will be stable enough to support your new denture. The denture itself will snap securely in place on the implants, which will prevent it from slipping or loosening while you talk, bite, or chew.
Tooth Extractions
Having a tooth extracted doesn’t have to be stressful! Especially when you have an experienced dental team to rely on.
While it’s true that dentists generally try everything within their power to save a natural tooth, in some cases, a tooth might be unsalvageable if it’s reached the point that root canal treatment or a crown won’t be enough to save it. If there is too much damage to a tooth, your dentist might tell you an extraction is your only option—particularly if leaving the tooth in question is threatening to damage your other teeth or negatively impact your overall health.
When Do We Recommend Tooth Extraction?
Dr. Khayyat typically recommends tooth extraction in these situations: Extensive tooth decay; Large crack or fracture; Tooth infected beyond what a root canal can save; Advanced gum disease has damaged a tooth; Wisdom teeth
If you need a tooth removed, our team goes above and beyond to ensure your comfort during your procedure. Dr. Khayyat has extensive experience and specialized training in tooth extraction and can make the experience efficient, comfortable, and stress-free. In addition, our team will support you throughout the entire process from start to finish. We will provide you with full instructions after the procedure to promote quick and painless healing in the days following the surgery.
When you lose a tooth that’s not a third molar (wisdom tooth), you must consider tooth replacement options to restore your smile. Dr. Khayyat also specializes in prosthodontics and implant dentistry, so he can recommend the best options for restoring your smile.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Although our ancestors needed third molars for chewing thousands of years ago, we no longer need wisdom teeth for our modern diets. Wisdom teeth are the final molars to come in and usually do so during the late teen years or early twenties. When wisdom teeth are fully erupted, meaning they have appeared above the gumline, you might not need oral surgery to have them extracted; however, most people don’t have enough room in their mouths to support third molars properly.
Some of the reasons we recommend wisdom tooth removal are:
Crowding: If you don’t have enough space for your wisdom teeth, they may begin to crown neighboring teeth and could cause tooth misalignment or other damage.
Ease: If you can’t easily brush and floss your third molars, you’re at a higher risk of developing problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
Impaction: If wisdom teeth remain impacted or stuck below the gumline, they can cause an infection.
Damage: Wisdom teeth that don’t come straight into position may arrive at odd angles that could damage neighboring teeth.
If you’re experiencing these situations, an extraction procedure at our dental office may be your best option. Because wisdom teeth are not replaced after extraction, you will not have to be concerned about tooth replacement.
Endodontics
Endodontics
Endodontists specialize in oral trauma and are often able to save teeth that have been injured in accidents or sports-related activities. Traumatic injuries include root fractures as well as teeth that have been chipped, dislodged, or completely knocked-out and should be seen immediately by an endodontist.
According to the American Association of Endodontists, root canal therapy is the most feared dental procedure of all. Despite this stigma, root canal therapy is actually a pain-free, quick and relatively comfortable procedure. In fact, it relieves your pain and can prevent more complicated oral issues down the road.
Root Canal Therapy
Each year over 14 million root canals are performed in the United States. However, despite being a common dental procedure, it still fills patients with thoughts of pain and anxiety. Fortunately, advances in technology and improved anesthetics have made root canal procedures relatively painless. In fact, many patients receiving root canals report experiencing little to no pain whatsoever during the procedure.
A root canal describes the natural cavity at a tooth’s core that contains the pulp chamber, a soft area of nerves that, when infected, can lead to adverse conditions such as face and neck swelling, and bone loss near your tooth’s roots.
At Discovery Dental San Marcos, our staff understands the apprehension patients feel about root canals and will work to alleviate their pain, and uneasiness by making them feel more comfortable and confident.
When Do You Need A Root Canal?
Are you experiencing severe pain or discomfort while eating? Are your teeth experiencing sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures? Do you have swollen gums or tooth discoloration? Do you have a chipped or cracked tooth? Is a reoccurring pimple on the gums causing you to fret?
If you have one or more of these symptoms, you might need a root canal. While nobody wants a root canal, knowing what symptoms to look out for can help expedite treatment and eliminate further issues.
Ideally, you should visit your dentist every six months for a routine checkup. At that time, your Discovery Dental dentist will be able to tell if you need a root canal or would benefit from another treatment option.
Root Canal Procedure
Root canals are performed by an endodontist, a dental specialist that has completed four years of dental school as well as two or more years of specialized training. For root canals, our dentists will use anesthetics to help patients avoid discomfort during the procedure.
In years past, root canal treatments would take multiple long visits. Thanks to advances in technology and technique, most patients can have the procedure completed in a single visit. However, if more than one tooth needs treatment, or if there is a severe infection, further visits may be required.
Here is a step-by-step guide of what to expect during your root canal.
The dentist will examine the tooth in question and administer a local anesthetic if necessary. After full numbness is achieved, the dentist places a small protective sheet (a dental dam) over the area in question to keep the area isolated and dry.
The dentist makes an opening in the crown of the tooth and cleans the infected pulp chamber and root canal before shaping the space for filling.
The root canals are filled with a biocompatible material which is then placed with adhesive cement to ensure the root canals remain fully sealed. This prevents any further risk of infection. In most cases, a temporary filling is placed to plug any gaps.
Finally, the crown or another restorative capsule is placed on the tooth to return it to its full function.
Most root canals take about 90 minutes to perform with some recuperation time afterward. However, please remember that procedure length and the number of appointments can vary depending on various factors.
Because your root canal uses a local anesthetic, you will not be impaired from driving home because the effects subside within a few minutes of discontinuation.
What to Expect After a Root Canal
Following your root canal, your tooth will stand a much better chance of remaining intact. The dentist may place a crown on the affected tooth to cover up incidental imperfections or discoloration.
If you experience pain do not be alarmed. It is common for patients to experience one or several days of mild discomfort after a root canal. This is a normal reaction that can be effectively treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. Your doctor may also prescribe a stronger medication, if necessary. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene such as brushing and flossing.
Eating After a Root Canal
Deciding what to eat after a root canal procedure can be challenging because everyone reacts to the procedure differently. Individual pain thresholds are not easy to measure. As a result, navigating what you can and cannot eat after a root canal can be problematic.
Patients are urged to eat soft foods for two to three days following a root canal treatment. They are also asked to avoid foods that are too hot or cold. Also, when eating afterward, it is best to chew slowly on the side of your mouth opposite from where you were treated. Patients recovering from a root canal are also discouraged from drinking alcohol, eating anything spicy, crunchy, or excessively chewy, like gum or taffy.
Should I Visit A Dentist After My Root Canal Procedure?
Be sure to make a follow-up appointment with your dentist after your root canal. Root canal procedures are complex, and the tooth may take considerable time to heal afterward. During the healing period, your tooth is sensitive and vulnerable and at greater risk of fracturing, so scheduling a follow-up appointment to make sure that your tooth is healing properly and ensure there are no post-procedure complications.
Periodontics
Periodontics
Periodontics is the dental specialty focusing exclusively in the inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal, or disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. As specialists in periodontal disease, they are experts in the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. They are also trained in cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Periodontists treat cases ranging from mild gingivitis to more severe periodontitis. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (the cleaning of infected root surfaces), root surface debridement (the removal of damaged tissue), and regenerative procedures (the reversal of lost bone and tissue). When necessary, periodontists can also perform surgical procedures for patients with severe gum disease. Additionally, periodontists are trained in the placement, maintenance and repair of dental implants.
Gum Disease
It is important to know that Gum Disease, also known as periodontitis or periodontal disease takes many forms and presents with different levels of severity. If left untreated, periodontitis can eventually lead to tooth loss and other potential health problems. There are several types of periodontal disease that our patients should be aware of.
One of the most common types of periodontal disease is called Gingivitis. Gingivitis causes your gums to become red and swollen. They may also tend to bleed easily. At this stage, you may experience little or no discomfort. Gingivitis is usually caused by an inadequate oral hygiene regimen. It is usually reversible with professional treatment and good oral hygiene habits such as regular brushing and flossing.
What Causes Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is caused by factors such as: Improper or infrequent brushing and flossing habits; Diabetes; Smoking; Aging; Stress; Genetics; Pregnancy; Hormones; Infection; Medication Use
Who Might Need Gum Disease Treatment?
If you are experiencing any of the following signs or symptoms, you may be in need of gum disease treatment: Red, swollen, or bleeding gums; Bad breath that does not go away; Loose teeth; Receding gums; Changes in the way your teeth fit together
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule a consultation with our expert dentist. Our team will conduct a thorough examination to determine the extent of your gum disease and recommend the best treatment options for your unique needs.
Scaling & Root Planing
Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing are considered essential periodontal services. If plaque and tartar are left on the teeth, it provides the right conditions for bacteria to thrive. The bacteria then irritates your gums, which means that they can bleed more easily. This is the early stage of gum disease called gingivitis. Normally, most people visit the dentist to have a regular dental hygiene checkup and teeth cleaning which works well to control the build-up of this bacteria.
However, if gingivitis is not treated and nothing is done about it, the inflammation will work its way down towards the foundation of the teeth causing a “pocket.” Inside this newly-formed pocket, bacteria can thrive and can cause even more damage. This can end up becoming quite a severe situation for the patient, ultimately leading towards periodontal disease itself.
Periodontists are specialists in treating periodontal disease and perform what is called a “Deep Cleaning,” a process that consists of Scaling and Root Planing.
In the dental world, deep cleaning is also known as Scaling and Root planing. Scaling is the process of removing dental tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. Root planing is the process of smoothing the root surfaces and removing any infected tooth structure.
If you have gum disease, the gum pockets around the teeth will have deepened, thus allowing tartar deposits to form under the gum line. Your South Calgary Periodontal Hygienist will scale away any tartar and perform any necessary root planing at the same time.
Generally, deep cleaning will require more than one visit depending on the amount of scaling and planing required. An additional follow-up visit may be required to confirm that your gums and teeth are getting healthier and that the pocket depth has been reduced.
Care after a Scaling and Root Planing Appointment
After your deep cleaning appointment, the bacteria in the pockets will have been removed, and you will have been instructed on how to perform the correct oral hygiene to support your oral health. Additional symptoms that may be experienced after a deep cleaning:
Discomfort can vary after root planing, but a patient can expect some degree of soreness afterward since the deep cleaning procedure is usually performed at a deeper region (under the gums). The teeth themselves can become a bit more sensitive to temperature, and occasionally there might be some bleeding for a short while afterward. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen, work very well to alleviate discomfort. But stronger painkillers can be given should you require them. Brushing and flossing can be delayed or done more gently for a few days following the deep cleaning procedure to avoid aggravating any bruised or tender gum areas. Your dentist or hygienist may recommend salt water or chlorhexidine rinses as a short-term alternative – or in addition to – your regular at home cleanings.

Don’t let dental fears keep you from having the smile you were meant to have. Dr. Khayyat will review all dental sedation options, including IV sedation. He is uniquely qualified to provide this type of sedation safely not only because of his advanced training but also because of his extensive experience, you can rest assured that you will be safe during your dental procedure. Let Dr. Khayyat ensure your comfort and lessen your anxiety with IV sedation.
With this type of sedation, anesthetic medications are administered directly into the bloodstream, so it goes to work quickly. The amount of medication can be adjusted by your dentist as needed during the procedure.
IV sedation is not used commonly in most dental offices because of the specialized advanced training required and the requirements for certification by the State Board of Dentistry. Dr. Khayyat is one of few dentists who is trained and certified in IV sedation.
What are the benefits of IV sedation?
The primary benefit of IV sedation at our dental office is that it provides people with a way to overcome their fears and get the dental treatment they need. In addition, IV sedation can:
Let you sleep through your entire procedure. You may not recollect anything from the procedure itself.
Make you aware of your surroundings during the procedure, while ensuring you are physically numb and in no pain or discomfort.
Relax you enough so you have no anxiety from having your mouth open for extended periods of time.
Sedation levels can be adjusted as needed, and results are instantaneous
Who is a good candidate for IV sedation?
There are a number of reasons sedation dentistry, including IV sedation, might be used, including:
Patients with severe dental anxiety; Patients who have a very low pain threshold; Patients who have a difficult time sitting in the dental chair for extended periods of time; Patients who have particularly sensitive teeth or a strong gag reflex; Patients who need an extensive amount of dental work completed.
What causes dental anxiety?
We see patients at our dental office who have developed dental anxiety for different reasons. Some patients recall a negative dental experience in childhood, and that fear has lingered with them into adulthood. Some patients just don’t like the sounds and smells of the dentist office. Others don’t like the feeling that they have no control over what is happening with their mouth.
Whatever the reason for dental anxiety, we realize it is very real—and we understand. We want you to know that you will have a different kind of experience at Discovery Dental. We will take our time with you while you are here, explaining what is going on to help you feel comfortable and not out of control.
If you are one of the many people who suffer from dental anxiety, we have solutions. We want you to feel calm and relaxed at your dental appointment.
Is IV sedation safe?
The risk of getting anesthesia has been reduced significantly in the last few decades. However, there is still some amount of risk when it comes to getting anesthesia. That’s why making sure your dentist is experienced is so important. Dr. Khayyat has performed IV sedation for so many patients over the years. You are in safe hands with his extensive experience.
Before your procedure, Dr. Khayyat will review your medical history and any medications you might be taking to ensure that you are a good candidate for sedation. During the procedure, he will carefully monitor your vital signs to ensure your safety. Don’t let anxiety keep you from receiving the treatment you need. Nitrous Oxide Sedation
At Discovery Dental, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to help you feel comfortable during your appointment. This mild sedative allows you to manage dental anxiety and relax so that you can receive your treatments with ease.
Do you ever feel nervous about visiting the dentist? Does your upcoming treatment make you feel anxious? If so, you may benefit from nitrous oxide (N2O) sedation at our office. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a nitrogen-oxygen mixture that you inhale through a nose mask during your treatment. As you breathe in the nitrous oxide, you will experience a relaxed or even euphoric sensation. Nitrous oxide can help you feel calm and at ease throughout your treatment.
Nitrous oxide sedation is very safe: the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we remove your nose mask, and you can legally and safely drive yourself home after your appointment.
Nitrous oxide is a good option for any of our patients who suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. If you feel anxious because you are receiving a treatment you have not experienced before, or if you simply dislike the sounds and sights of the dental office, we may recommend nitrous oxide to help you feel more relaxed. Be certain to discuss your concerns with our dentist and team before your visit so we can help you feel more comfortable during your treatment. We invite you to contact us today to learn more!
